What is Active Inference explained in simple terms?

Category: Foundational Concepts

Active Inference (ActInf) is a theory explaining how intelligent beings – from a single cell to a complex AI – navigate the world. In simple terms, imagine an agent that has an internal story or ‘model’ of how the world works. Its primary goal is to make sure its story stays accurate by minimizing “plot twists” or surprises. It does this in two ways: by updating its story to better match the world (Perception), or by acting on the world to make it conform to its story (Action).

For a comprehensive look at how this applies to Web4 and AGI, see our full guide on Active Inference.
